MICHELANGELO SERIES

The German director, cinematographer, and writer Curt Oertel first created a short film about the life and times of Michelangelo in 1937 in collaboration with the Swiss production company Pandora-Film.  The success of this short convinced Oertel to create a full length documentary with the Pandora-Tobis-Film German-Swiss production team.  The film was released in 1940 to even greater acclaim.  The full title was "Michelangelo -- The Life of a Titan."   The film was narrated by German actor Mathias Wieman.

The film was re-edited in 1950 and released in America as "The Titan: Story of Michelangelo."  Produced by director Robert J. Flaherty and narrated by Frederic March, this version won Best Documentary Film in 1951.

The American version is available for viewing at the Internet Archive.

A series of 18 postcards with images from the film were published by Ross Verlag in the early 40's.  These cards were released with either the "Ross Verlag" or "Film Foto Verlag" names on them.  This obviously must have been around the time of the publishing companies name change.

Information about the the film production obtained through Wikipedia and IMDB.
