EDITION "ROSS"
By Hans Schnepper

It is impossible to establish when Edition “Ross” cards were first published. The use of Edition “Ross” and reproduction interdite indicate these cards were made for the French market. Curiously, “Ross” chose not to use the correct spelling, with accents on the “e”, which would have meant Edition written as Édition, and reproduction as réproduction.

Aimed at the French market, Edition “Ross” cards appear not to have been advertised in German film magazines, and I do not know if instead they were advertised in French film magazines. This means that at this moment it’s not known exactly when Edition “Ross” postcards were first published. These cards used portaits already published in the main “Ross” Verlag series, using numbers roughly between 4000 to 8500. That the Edition “Ross” cards were considered equal to the “Ross” Luxus cards is evident from the use of the golden Luxus sticker on the backs of the cards, many of which have survived. The size was also in Weltformat (world size), 10,5 x 14,8 cm. The Edition “Ross” postcards discussed here are known only in schwarz-Hochglanz.

I will ignore the lowest Edition “Ross” number I have recorded, Rudolph Valentino 4083/1, which I believe to be an anomaly. “Ross” Verlag usually didn’t publish postcards of deceased actors, and card 4083/1 in the regular series was published in 1929 by which time Valentino had been dead for about three years. This issue may have been connected with a re-release of one of Valentino’s films, as several European countries re-released various Valentino films in the late 1920s. Looking at the first few dozen film titles listed above it would seem that the Edition “Ross” cards were first published somewhere around 1930. I cannot believe that this French series would have started before publication of the first German Luxus cards, and I feel both series started around the same moment in time. The highest Edition “Ross” numbers I have recorded are Lilian Harvey 8431/1 and -/2, both using portraits from I Am Suzanne!, which was released in the US in December 1933, so the Edition “Ross” series appear to have run simultaneously with the Luxus series for some time, most probably the entire run. 1933 was the last year Luxus cards were published. The last “real” Luxus card was 803 Lilian Harvey.

Beneath the images, are text lists for the cards with further information.
